GIS Applications Presented at Coastal Geotools '99 Conference in Charleston, S.C.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Coastal
Service Center joined with the Environmental Systems Research Institute
(ESRI), the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC), the National States
Geographic Information Council, and the Coastal States Organization to
sponsor a national Coastal Geotools Conference on April 5-7, 1999.
The conference was a forum to educate
coastal resource managers about current efforts and future trends in
geoprocessing and geospatial data collection, analysis, management, and
dissemination.
Presentations from the USGS included:
- Barbara Seekins—Geographic Information System (GIS)
Applied to Shoreline Change Analysis: A Case Study in Massachusetts
on Buzzards Bay
- Florence Wong—USGS GIS for the Monterey Sanctuary
- VeeAnn Cross—Use of GIS and Global Positioning Satellite
(GPS) for Planning and Conducting Nearshore Cruise Operations Off
Southern Washington and Northern Oregon
Barbara and VeeAnn's talks sparked lively discussions at the meeting
and Florence's talk drew interest from the Sustainable Seas Expedition, which is going to be
surveying the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary in May. Jeff Williams
represented Coastal & Marine Geology Program interests.
