USGS / Geological Survey of Canada Meet in Woods Hole
On Thursday and Friday, February 10-11, Jeff Williams, Peter Barnes, and Debbie Hutchinson (representing Coastal and Marine Geology, USGS) met with Dick Pickrill (representing Marine Environmental Geoscience, Geological Survey of Canada) to discuss areas of overlap and common interest between our two national Geological Surveys. An impressive number of issues was discussed that will provide opportunities to develop and strengthen the USGS and CGS collaboration (e.g., seafloor mapping, sediment dynamics, harmful algal blooms, gas hydrates, sea-level rise, environmental geochemistry, knowledge bank, Great Lakes studies etc.). Some of the topics for immediate action included planning annual meetings for the managers, mutual membership on program advisory committees, a joint workshop on seafloor mapping technology, planning a joint meeting on sediment dynamics, encouraging individual scientist collaboration and possibly short-term exchange visits, and developing equipment inventories. This meeting will help lay the groundwork for refining and expanding the current Memorandum of Understanding between the USGS and GSC.
