MARGINS Meeting
Uri ten Brink (WHFC) participated in the MARGINS Theoretical Institute on Rheology and Deformation of the Lithosphere at the Continental Margins course and workshop from January 23-26, near Salt Lake City. MARGINS is an NSF-funded initiative to promote research of continental margins, including stratigraphy and sedimentology, tectonics, the character of the seismogenic zone, and the geochemical cycle in subduction zones. The two-day workshop following the course gave participants an opportunity to select two focus areas for the study of rupture and deformation processes of the continental lithosphere. The focus areas had to be areas of active deformation in which the whole spectrum from continental rifting to seafloor spreading can be observed. The areas chosen in priority order were the Gulf of California and the northern Red Sea.
