Woods Hole Community Activities
The Woods Hole, MA, community celebrated Black History Month. This cultural history month is just one aspect of our rich multi-faceted American legacy. Americans share three plus centuries of related history, unique culture, and citizenship! The WHFC is a co-sponsor of Black History Month and provided some helping hands: Glynn Williams, Jamey Reid, Eben Perry, Ben Gutierrez, Chris Polloni, and Fausto Marincioni. In celebration, there were two screenings of a video documentary called "The Odyssey of Captain Healy." Captain Healy was one of the U.S. Coast Guard's most celebrated African-American officers. On board the Cutter BEAR, Healy represented the only law along the 30,000-mile coastline of lawless Alaskan Territory frontier during the late 1800s. A fearless ice sailor, Mike Healy was renowned as a master navigator. He saved hundreds of lives in shipwrecks at sea, confronted rumrunners and mutinous sailors, and guided the whaling fleet through the ice pack. The Nation's press covered his exploits, yet little was known of his private life. Other activities included a talk entitled "Where We Were, Where We Are, Where We're Going: Challenges of the 21st Century," presented by Admiral Evelyn Fields of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Professor Michael Blakey of Howard University gave a talk entitled "New York Burial Ground and the Struggle for Human Rights." In addition, there was the annual Harambee, which is an ethnic potluck feast featuring live music, marionette shows, book and information displays, and arts and craft exhibits.
